In his last address to the media Argentine Football Association president Claudio Chiqui Tapia made an important announcement regarding the number 10 shirt symbol.

Tapia has announced that when Lionel Messi decides to end his national team career the respectable shirt number will also be permanently retired.

While some clubs retire from time to time to honor famous players it is strange for the national team to do so. Of course Argentina has previously tried to retire from number ten in honor of Diego Maradona but FIFA has rejected the offer. Whether they will approve a similar compliment for Messi remains uncertain.

Messi has scored an impressive 106 goals and 53 assists in 180 international appearances. He played a key role in Albiceleste victories at the World Cup and Copa America as well as securing the Finalissima and even an Olympic gold medal.
